Interview with Yariv-part 2

And today : the continuation of Yariv’s interview. Enjoy!

J: And is there much difference between the two? I imagine it’s a bit like our King James Bible, that authorized version of the Bible, and modern English. There are some words the same, but …

Y: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, for me, as a person who was born to the Hebrew language, I can really read the Bible and fully understand it and I didn’t learn biblical Hebrew, I was born to the modern Hebrew.

J: Of course, yeah, yeah …

Y: But when you teach, it’s different, because it has some different grammatical structures …

J: Oh, okay …

Y: But I think that when you have to choose whether to learn Biblical Hebrew or modern Hebrew it’s really …With modern Hebrew you will be able both to interact in Israel when you travel and have a better understanding when you read the text. Biblical is really for people who want to understand the biblical text in the original, so this is …

J: And I imagine for many people, for many Christian believers to learn biblical Hebrew is, as you said, to able to read the Old Testament scriptures in their original language. That must be something special because there must be many meanings that you can get from that you wouldn’t get from a modern translation.

Y: Absolutely, this is the reason. I will give you just one example. We are all familiar with the story of Adam and Eve. So, the word “erem” in Hebrew has a lot of meanings. One of them is “human being”. But the root of the word “Adam” is “adama”, which is “earth” and this comes to show us that God created man from earth.

J: eTeacherbiblical.com if you want to look at the original language, eTeacherbiblical.com. I’m sure you’re on the site already, Lizzie, and practicing some phrases.

L: That’s right, I’m limbering up with my Hebrew. The thing is I need someone to help me, because I think, seeing it, it’s quite hard to say it, isn’t it? You need help with the pronunciation.

J: Yariv, thank you very much indeed!

Y: Thank you, my pleasure!
