Each year on the 27th of Nisan, the state of Israel marks the Holocaust Remembrance Day.
This year, Yom HaShoah will happen on Thursday, April 19.
The Hebrew word “Shoah” means “whirlwind”.
At 10:00 am on Yom HaShoah, sirens are sounded throughout Israel for 2 minutes. During the sirens, people stand at attention and cars and buses stop. We all stand and honor the ones who lost their lives during the Holocaust.
The Nazis believed in a doctrine of racial superiority, centering around the idea that people of Northern European descent were better than members of all other races , especially the Jews, who were “unworthy of life.”
Since 1933, the Nazis gradually restricted the rights of German Jewish citizens and encouraged their followers to commit acts of violence and destruction against Jews and their property. During World War II (1939-1945), the Nazis implemented their “final solution” a plan to concentrate and annihilate all European Jews. Jews were first crammed together in ghettoes and slave-labor camps, where disease, brutality, and malnutrition ran rampant. At the end, they were sent to death camps, where millions were murdered in special facilities designed to kill a tremendous number of people over a brief period of time. The Nazis decided to kill people who weren’t part of the” Aryan race” . In addition to the six million Jews who died , the Nazis also killed millions of others: Gypsies, Slavs, political and religious dissidents, handicapped, gays and lesbians.
The Holocaust day is a special and important day which reminds Jews all over the world to be united and that their true home is in Israel.
The most famous song of Yom Ha’Shoah is Walk to Caesaria , also known as “Eli Eli”. This song has been written by Hannah Szenes.
Szenes was a Hungarian Jew, one of 37 Jews from the British Mandate for Palestine that were trained by the British army to parachute into Yugoslavia during the Second World War in order to save the Jews of Hungary. Szenes was arrested at the Hungarian border, imprisoned and tortured, but refused to reveal details of her mission. On November 7, 1944 , Szenes was executed by firing squad.
Eli, Eli (A Walk To Caesarea) :
she’lo yigamer l’olam
rishrush shel hamayim
My Lord, My Lord
May it never end
The sand and sea,
Murmur of the water,
Shine of the sky,
Prayer of Man.
שלא יגמר לעולם
רשרוש של המים,
