Benzion Netanyahu – The Death of A Noble Man

Only handfuls of people reach the age of 102…One of these special people was Benzion Netanyahu.

On April 30, 2012, Benzion Netanyahu passed away at the age of 102. He is the father of 3 sons: Benjamin Netanyahu- Israel’s current Prime Minister, Iddo – a physician, and Yoni – former commander of Sayeret Matkal , who was killed in action leading Operation Entebbe in 1976.

Netanyahu was a world renowned scholar of Jewish History, Zionist activist, Professor emeritus of Cornell University, author of the following books: The Origins of the Inquisition in Fifteenth-Century Spain, The Five Forefathers of Zionism , Don Isaac Abravanel: Statesman and Philosopher and The Founding Fathers of Zionism.

Benzion Netanyahu was born in 1910, in Warsaw, Poland.

In 1920, his family immigrated to Palestine (Today –Israel). The family has decided to settle in Jerusalem. At first, Benzion studied in the teachers’ seminary run by David Yellin, and later went on to study History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

During his studies, Netanyahu became active in Revisionist Zionists circles. He was an editor at the Zionist Political Library, Jerusalem and Tel-Aviv, 1935–1940. He traveled to New York and He served as a secretary to Ze’ev Jabotinsky, the father of Revisionist Zionism, and was a Revisionist leader in the Zionist Movement in the US. During World War 2, he pursued his PhD, at Dropsie College in Philadelphia.

In 1944, Netanyahu married Tzila Segal.

In 1952, the family moved to its home to Haportzim Street in Jerusalem.

Since his son’s death in 1976, Benzion Netanyahu changed his focus to international terrorism, with the belief that it is possible to fight terrorism by fighting states that sponsor it.

Although he had many ideas on the fate of Jews and how to handle many of Israel’s problems, he never got involved in Israeli politics.

At the funeral, his son, Benjamin Netanyahu said that his father:” had shown him what commitment was, both to the state and to family”.
